Organisations and professionals representing Disabled people, including HAD, Inclusion London, Claddag and Disability Rights UK, have published a statement responding to the Grenfell inquiry. It condemns in the strongest terms the structural racism and disablism that led to injustice of the Grenfell Tower fire, and calls on the Government to put in place policies that will ensure it never happens again.
The statement calls for:
An immediate implementation of the Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) recommendation
Any proposals related to housing safety be developed in collaboration with Disabled people
An extension of the definition of higher-risk buildings
Acknowledgement of Disabled people in legislation and guidance on fire safety strategy
Make housing accessible
Engage with Disabled residents
Support during Remediation
